I’ve always felt this to be true. And as much as I enjoy ogling, buying and using new tools, I always find in my own work that it isn’t the fanciest, most expensive tools that I turn to; It is the ones that I can rely on. The tools that feel comfortable in my hand. Those tools that I’ve used so much that I know just how to lean on them to correct for a minor imperfection, or to finesse a finish just so.
It’s the tools passed on from ones parent or grandparent that bare the marks of decades of loving use that make the craft of woodworking so satisfying.

It’s getting harder to find these types of tools for many of us. Recent generations are less inclined to take up ‘hands on’ hobbies. People rely more on outsourced labor for general repairs and renovations around the house. It may be a bit of a dying craft. But there is still a strong culture for the love of woodworking, and making things with your hands.
These people know the value of a well engineered, well crafted tool; A nicely weighted smoothing plane with soft edges and a razor-sharp blade, finely tuned to produce wispy shavings that almost float through the air.

Thankfully, over the past couple decades an army of enthusiasts have amassed an amazing collection of used, antique and collectible woodworking tools and have taken to the internet to share them with the woodworking community. Tools on offer range from planes, saws, chisels, measuring and marking devices to specialized tools for timber framing, coopering, coach building and more. I have scoured the internet and compiled a list of all the online dealers I could find, and offer it here for you, to find that special tool to fill out your hanging wall cabinet.
I have done my best to represent each dealer fairly and accurately, and to dig up as many small shops around the English speaking world I could find.
